Which Canadian model should you pick?

  • 585W TOPCon – the volume choice: cheapest per watt, fits every standard structure, easiest to resell. The default for home systems.
  • 620/625W HJT – Canadian’s efficiency play: best low-light and hot-weather output, worth the roughly Rs. 1/W premium in Sindh and south Punjab heat.

Canadian Solar in the Pakistani market

Canadian Solar is one of the oldest Tier-1 manufacturers still shipping in volume – founded in Canada, manufacturing in China, and present in Pakistan long enough that its name carries recognition beyond the solar trade. That recognition is exactly why the label is among the most counterfeited in local markets, and why the serial-verification step below is not optional.

Its Pakistani range splits into three technology families. TOPCon covers the volume 585-640W models. HJT (heterojunction) appears in the 620/625W and some 710-720W models and is Canadian’s real differentiator here. And the large-format 710-720W modules serve roof-constrained installations. There is no longer a current P-Type single-glass line: the 545-575W panels still circulating are clearance stock.

Why HJT matters in Pakistani heat

610-640W N-Type 20BB – the value per watt

Rs. 25,215-31,070 for the 610/615/640W range and Rs. 25,830-31,383 for the 630/635W 20-busbar version. More busbars means slightly better current collection and marginally better tolerance of micro-cracks over time. In practice these compete directly with the 585W on rupees per watt while needing one fewer panel per 5 kW – worth taking if your structure can accommodate the slightly larger format.

620/625W HJT – the hot-climate specialist

Rs. 26,040-31,374. Heterojunction cells combine crystalline and thin-film layers to deliver the best temperature behaviour of any mainstream technology, plus better low-light performance at dawn and dusk. In Karachi, Hyderabad, Multan or Jacobabad, where roof temperatures sit above 55°C for months, this is the model that justifies its premium.

710-720W – for constrained roofs

Rs. 28,957-35,258, combining TOPCon and HJT construction. Seven of these make 5 kW against nine 585W panels: less structure, less wiring, fewer connections to fail. The trade-offs are physical – each panel is larger and heavier, harder to carry up a staircase and more exposed to wind loading – and financial, since large-format panels command a premium in Pakistan that they do not always command elsewhere.

The discontinued models still on the market

Canadian’s 545W, 550W, 555W and 575W panels are discontinued, yet still appear in quotes – sometimes honestly as clearance, sometimes not. The 575W N-Type at around Rs. 28,924 is the most defensible of these if the price reflects its status. The older P-Type single-glass models are a different matter: they are a superseded generation whose warranty is difficult to exercise and impossible to match if one fails.

Karachi is consistently the cheapest market because containers land there first; upcountry cities carry Rs. 2-3 per watt of transport on top. Avoid detergents and anything abrasive on the anti-reflective coating.

The Pakistani solar market is full of invented specifications, and the genuinely important numbers – wattage, price per watt, technology, documentation status – are all simple.

Why solar maths works so well in Pakistan

Solar pays back faster here than in most of the world, and the reason has less to do with sunshine than with how electricity is billed. Residential tariffs are structured in slabs: the more units you consume in a month, the higher the rate applied, and once fuel adjustments, taxes and surcharges are added, households in the upper slabs pay somewhere between forty-five and sixty-five rupees for every unit.

That structure is what makes solar so effective. Every unit your panels produce and your household consumes is a unit removed from the top of your bill, priced at the marginal rate rather than the average one. A system generating six hundred and fifty units a month is not saving you six hundred and fifty units at some notional average price – it is stripping the most expensive units off the top, and it can drop you into a lower slab, which reduces the rate on everything you do still import.

This is also why payback periods vary so much between households with identical systems. A family already deep in the upper slabs sees payback inside two years. A modest household consuming two hundred units a month, sitting in a protected lower slab, may take four or five years for the same installation – still worthwhile, but a different proposition. Before committing to a system size, look at twelve months of your own bills and find where your consumption actually sits.

The second factor is sunshine, and here Pakistan is genuinely fortunate: most of the country receives strong, consistent irradiation, and a well-installed kilowatt of panels produces around four and a half to five units a day between April and September and roughly three in winter.
