Efficiency, degradation and what the numbers really mean

Panel marketing revolves around three figures, and all three matter less than buyers are told.

Efficiency (22.5-23.2% across current Tier-1 N-Type stock) describes how much of the sunlight hitting the panel becomes electricity. It only matters when roof area is limited: on an unconstrained roof, a slightly less efficient panel simply needs marginally more space for the same output, usually at a lower price. Comparing efficiency between panels of the same wattage is close to meaningless – a 585W panel produces 585W under test conditions whatever its efficiency.

Degradation matters more. Current N-Type panels lose about 1% in the first year and roughly 0.4% annually after, ending near 87-88% of rated output at year 30. The discontinued P-Type generation degrades faster, which is one of the substantive reasons to avoid clearance stock rather than merely a marketing point.

Temperature coefficient is the figure that deserves the most attention in Pakistan and gets the least. At -0.29%/°C, a panel at a realistic 60°C summer cell temperature loses about 10% of rated output. HJT models at -0.25%/°C lose closer to 8.75%. What Tier-1 does not guarantee is that the specific panel you are handed is genuine, current-generation and documented. From April to September, as bills climb and load-shedding bites, dealers are busy, installers are booked out weeks ahead, and neither has much reason to negotiate. Why solar maths works so well in Pakistan

Solar pays back faster here than in most of the world, and the reason has less to do with sunshine than with how electricity is billed. Residential tariffs are structured in slabs: the more units you consume in a month, the higher the rate applied, and once fuel adjustments, taxes and surcharges are added, households in the upper slabs pay somewhere between forty-five and sixty-five rupees for every unit.

That structure is what makes solar so effective. Every unit your panels produce and your household consumes is a unit removed from the top of your bill, priced at the marginal rate rather than the average one.
